THE SHAREHOLDERS OF HC SLOVAN BRATISLAVA REACT TO THE INITIATIVE OF MOST CLUBS OF THE HIGHEST SLOVAK COMPETITION TO ESTABLISH AN INDEPENDENT PRIVATE HOCKEY LEAGUE.
Members of the Association of Professional Hockey Clubs (APHK), with the exception of HK Dukla Ingem Michalovce and HC SLOVAN Bratislava (not a member of APHK) at the end of the Tipos Extraliga 2020/2021 hockey year, began to take steps to create an independent private hockey league called the Professional Hockey League. In March, the clubs signed a memorandum on the establishment of a private hockey league, and in April they also founded the civic association Professional Hockey League. The new competition would operate independently and would be separated from the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH). We bring the statement of the shareholders of HC SLOVAN Bratislava on the mentioned initiative of the clubs about the possible creation of PHL.
STATEMENT of HC SLOVAN Bratislava:
The owners of HC SLOVAN Bratislava perceived the corridors about the creation of an independent private hockey league, but were not directly involved in any negotiations on the creation of such an entity. It was only when SZĽH invited us to a meeting of the hockey clubs of the extra league and the SZĽH executive committee that we were first confronted with the idea of creating a Professional Hockey League (PHL).
Only then were we approached by representatives of the civic association PHL (after the end of the current year of the Tipos Extraliga) to meet and present the reasons for the establishment of PHL. In addition to HC Slovan, the basis of their dissatisfaction with the current situation was personal animosities with SZLH representatives and also the knowledge that they are not able to enforce their demands for a more significant position of Extraliga clubs within the hockey movement through the SZĽH congress. Simply - democratic principles enshrined in the statutes of SZĽH have become a hindrance to their further development.
HC Slovan has unequivocally taken the view that it will never join such views in any case. We are of the opinion that the best solution for Slovak hockey is for SZĽH to cover all activities in the marketing and media space on the small Slovak market, as it is the only one who can offer potential partners the widest range of partnerships from national teams, the Extraleague, 1. League, 2. League and also hockey youth. And so only SZĽH is able to attract the most resources from Slovak partners for Slovak hockey. Any other solution deprives Slovak hockey of its potential. It is also necessary to state unequivocally that in the person of Miroslav Šatan, SZĽH is currently headed by the most respected hockey personality recognized in our country and abroad. If SZĽH gained such a strong position, its position in negotiations with partners would be even more significant.
In the relationship within the Slovak hockey movement, the basis must be democratic principles, enshrined in the statutes of SZĽH. He who is not willing to accept these democratic principles cannot have a place in the structures of the SZĽH.
HC Slovan is determined to support the strong SZĽH, although other clubs will form an independent PHL from SZĽH. Of course, the level of the highest competition will fall, but only for a transitional period (maybe a year). With a quality education of young hockey players, we will move the highest competition to a level that will satisfy hockey fans not only on the domestic but also on the foreign scene.
We are convinced that the unity of the hockey movement can only be achieved by respecting democratic principles and mutual respect for the work of all those who participate directly or indirectly in the development of Slovak hockey, including fans.
